MAKING A DIFFERENCE
When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment is, he answered: “The most important one is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31, Today’s New International Version
Sharing the love of God with others is a part of Salem’s DNA. Making a difference for Christ is one of our core values.
Faith in Action Sunday
Don’t just go to church…BE the church!
On a Sunday in October, Salem joins other churches across the nation who put their faith into action for the day by rescheduling worship and spending the morning in service projects for the community. We have something for everyone–we assemble care packages for soldiers serving overseas and for residents of the local domestic violence shelter; we pray for and send cards to law enforcement officers, emergency responders, teachers and school staff; we provide free automobile inspections and top off fluids! In addition, we send teams out to do home repair and renovation. After serving all morning, we come back together for a meal and a worship service in which we thank God for the day’s work. The F.U.E.L. program is a food subsidization program that places food directly in the back packs of children who may not eat between lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. Salem is very active in this ministry.
Holiday Food Baskets
Every year Salem donates food baskets for families in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The food basket program is led by Morris and Diane Stevens.
SAINTS ALIVE! is a week long, community missions project for youth in 9th-12th grades. SAINTS ALIVE! serves families in need by building wheelchair ramps, porches, roofing, painting, sheetrock, and other home repairs. Youth pay $250 to come take part in SAINTS ALIVE! and help families in need. There are also programs for the youth nightly, which include a speaker and worship. Meals and lodging are provided for the youth as part of the cost. SAINTS ALIVE! is traditionally held during the last full week of June.
